Former Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) worker, Fay Steele, 93, speaks to a crowd in Lake County, Tenn. about a food strike in the camp and man from Dyersburg, Tenn. who was extra handy with a sledgehammer. Steele is a former CCC worker and decorated World War II veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star. He is also a world record runner. He was the first person to run from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean in a single day. The feat happened in Panama on Labor Day of 1940. Steele ran the 52 miles of the isthmus of Panama in 12 hours and 22 minutes. He was also a zoologist, specializing in ornithology.
