The City of Dyersburg paused for a moment on Friday morning to honor Dyersburg firemen who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to the community. The city's third annual Fallen Firefighter's Memorial, held at 10 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 7, added Dyersburg Fire Department's first known fatality to the list of fire fighters honored for losing their lives in the line of duty. The program, initiated as the Eagle Scout project of Luis Portillo in October 2009, first honored Dyersburg firemen William "Bill" Dudley and Pratt Fletcher, who gave their lives fighting a hotel fire in downtown Dyersburg in 1942. This year, firemen with the DFD learned another of their brothers had given the ultimate sacrifice seven years before the fire that consumed the Tennessee Hotel. On the morning of Sept. 14, 1935, DFD fireman Byron M. Robb was one of several Dyersburg firemen called to battle a city work truck on fire at the city dump in Southtown.
